Length of Program: 900 hours (six to seven months)
The Culinary Arts Specialist Program at New Community Career and Technical Institute provides occupational training with hands-on instruction. Students get real experience in the fully equipped commercial kitchen in the New Community Extended Care Facility.
Instruction is broad based, including methods of food preparation, kitchen skills, food terminology and equipment, soups, stocks and sauces, cost control, safety, sanitation and nutrition. To fine-tune their training, students complete their training with a 150-hour internship with one of the school’s employment partners.
New Community Career and Technical Institute has developed relationships with a diverse group of employers including, but not limited to, hotels, restaurants and major food service organizations.
Instructors are familiar with industry trends, possess the required educational attainments and are very knowledgeable about the culinary industry.
Program Requirements:
- All students must be at least 18 years of age on or before the first day of class
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Provide proof of citizenship

On-Site Experience at the Culinary Cafe
The New Community Culinary Cafe features tasty and delicious daily lunch specials prepared by top culinary students under the direction of highly experienced culinary professionals. The Culinary Cafe is operated by the Culinary Arts Specialist program offered by New Community Career and Technical Institute. It’s open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside Extended Care at 266 South Orange Ave. in Newark.
